All Friends Nature School is growing. We are so excited for the growth in outdoor education. We are currently seeking early childhood educators with the desire and enthusiasm to work with children outdoors.
Our program is run entirely outdoors, meeting in canyons, meadows, and parks in the central San Diego area.
TEACHER
- Work hours are Monday-Friday 8:15-1:30 p.m., plus 5 hrs prep time per week, and weekly staff meetings
Ideal candidates will have –
- Experience with outdoor/nature based mentoring
- Knowledge of local flora and fauna
- Familiarity and/or experience with Waldorf education
- Experience with traditional/ancient skills
- Minimum 2 years experience teaching with groups of 2-6 year olds, including one year of teaching experience in a forest school setting
- The ability to track and document children’s development
- The ability to assess development of children in care
- The ability to recognize the need for outside intervention for children in care
- The ability to implement emergency response plans in unexpected events
- Uphold safety guidelines, rules, and land regulations
- Knowledge of local hazards
- Previously acquired naturalist / nature connection / local natural history
- Ability to continually assess land for hazards
- Ability to continually assess impact of program on natural environment
Qualifications –
- Minimum 2 years experience teaching with groups children 2-6 years old, including at least 1 year of teaching experience in an outdoor, nature based setting
Candidates must possess at least one of the following:
- Minimum 12 units completed in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or equivalent field courses
- Completion of a minimum of level two Forest School teacher training
- Comparable recognized teacher training level 2
ASSISTANT TEACHER
- Work hours are Monday-Friday mornings, 8:15-1:30pm. There is an additional 1 hour staff meeting per week
Ideal candidates will have –
- Experience with outdoor/nature based mentoring
- Knowledge of local flora and fauna
- Familiarity and/or experience with Waldorf education
- Experience with traditional/ancient skills
- Minimum 2 years experience teaching with groups of 2-6 year olds, including one year of teaching experience in a forest school setting

Qualifications – Candidates must possess most of the following attributes
- Experience working with children age 2-7 years of age
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Comfortable sitting on the ground and getting dirty
- Comfortable handling insects and other small creatures
- Interested in further growth in naturalist studies and mentoring
- A nurturing, loving, and creative attitude
- Dedicated to developmentally appropriate practice and aware of developmental needs of young children
- Observant
- Physically fit, able to crouch, dig, climb, hike, and carry up to 40lbs
- Have reliable transportation
- CPR certification, Pediatric First Aid, and ability to pass criminal records check
- Experience in story telling; Play a musical instrument and/or singing!!
- Preferred Knowledge and understanding of Forest Kindergartens, Waldorf Education and Reggio Emilia pedagogy
